On Thursday May 17th North Catholic’s Model UN delegation departed for New York City to compete in the 8th annual World Model United Nations Conference, a multi-day event designed to challenge competitors into thinking on their feet and acting to the best of their ability for extended periods of time. However the North delegation rose to the occasion and proved that sheer determination can go beyond imagination.
From start to finish, all 9 North delegates who attended the conference, acted with experience and skill beyond comparison, and were acknowledged with the title Supreme World Champions of 2007. From the beginning, the delegates elevated themselves above the competition, however, 4 students in particular, remained steadfast in the face of various events, leading the team to victory. While representing the Russian Federation, Michael Smaczylo and Marcus Rodriquez, achieved gavel status, the highest honors attainable. Club President William Galson and Vice-President Milan Stanic attained the honor of being the Outstanding Delegation while representing the United States of America in the Security Council, the committee requiring utmost responsibility.
In response to North Catholic’s victory, the team’s moderator Rev. John Hurley OSFS is quoted to have exclaimed: “This victory has been the greatest in the last decade, and an astounding finale for the graduating members, one that will be remembered among the team.”
